GETTING AROUND

One of the tools I love to use and provide guests is a nice little website called www.Rome2Rio.com It gives you an idea on how to get around from your location once on the island and provides a rough suggestion on fare prices as well.

Car

The best way to get around Majorca is by car. Having your own set of wheels gives you the most freedom to explore the island on your own terms.

That said, when you’re touring various cities and towns – especially Palma – you should leave the car parked and get around on foot since streets in these historic places are often narrow.

Also note that the steep mountainous roads around the Tramuntana mountains can be treacherous. They are full of hairpin bends and get very busy during the summer season, so plan for the journey to take extra time during these peak seasons as you’re bound to come into buses occupying the road or cyclists that narrow the lanes when overtaking.

Coach transfers

It is increasingly common for travellers to get on a coach transfer as it works out more cost effective.  Bear in mind that these however may take longer as they have to drop other passengers at their locations too.  These you can arrange via the following sites (who also offer private transfers):

Palma Buses (EMT)

Palma has its city bus (blue & white) which covers Palma and its surrounding areas including the airport and Playa de Palma.  When arriving you will easily find the bus stop opposite arrivals as well as ticket vending machines.

When you consider the locals (some are sweaty airport luggage handlers after a hot day’s work) who use their prepaid cards to get in ahead of the tourists with luggage into packed buses with aircon that cannot cope during summer I find the bus fares quite expensive.  They recently jumped from 2.5 Euros to 5 Euros in a matter of years and a taxi to town can cost around 20 Euros so it might be worthwhile if you are a family making the short trip.

TIB Buses

For those planning to travel regularly between towns, Majorca’s erd and yellow buses connect most of the island, but they run on limited schedules, especially on the weekends or bank holidays.

You can purchase bus tickets on the bus or pay 3 euros for an Intermodal Card, a rechargeable card convenient for multiple trips, at the Palma Intermodal Station (the main station in Palma). Prices for bus tickets vary depending on the departure point and the destination.

For more information see: Consorci de Transports de Mallorca (TIB)

Taxis

One of the better ways to get around the island if you’re looking for a no nonsense transfer to your hotel without multiple stops and ideal for short journeys.  You can prebook your transfer via the following websites:
